EKO trademarkFood or agricultural products certified in the Netherlands as “organic” can be identified by the “EKO” trademark. These products are grown without using artificial fertilizers or chemical pesticides and they do not contain any artificial aroma’s, colouring agents, flavourings or preservatives. Organic farming standards are based on protecting the environment, nature and landscape and the welfare of animals. European legislation sets the minimum standards throughout the EU that are guaranteed by organic certification.
Inspection: Skal
Within the Netherlands organic products are inspected by Skal, the inspection body appointed by the Dutch government. Skal has been an independent, internationally operating body since 1985. Organic products produced in the Netherlands must be certified by Skal and are then allowed to carry the EKO label. See www.skal.com for more information about Skal.
Biodynamic farming in The Netherlands
Demeter trademarkBiodynamic (BD) farming originates from anthroposophy, a philosophy developed at the start of the 20th century by the Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner. Its central concept is that there is a relationship between plant, animal, soil and the cosmos. The aim is to achieve a closed cycle of inputs. Biodynamic standards are in addition to the minimum EU standards for organic production. The Dutch label for biodynamic products is Demeter. Inspection is undertaken by Skal and Stichting Demeter.
